Age of Faith is an American Christian rock band formed in 1987 by Jimi Ray and Rick Harwell. In its early years, the project functioned primarily as a duo, although they occasionally performed with a full band lineup. During this first stage, they released two nationally distributed recordings under the Benson Music Group label and remained active on tour until their split in 1994.
Their self-titled debut album, Age of Faith (1991), showcases a strong influence of melodic rock and AOR typical of the late 1980s, featuring clean guitar work, accessible song structures, and catchy choruses, aligning with the dominant sound of Christian rock at the time.
In 1996, Jimi Ray re-formed the band alongside Steve Blair and David Buchanan, marking a new era after signing with Atlanta-based label Gray Dot. With this lineup, Age of Faith recorded three additional albums and strengthened their presence within the 1990s Christian rock scene. Their first release from this period produced the #1 radio hit “The Love of Jesus,” along with other charting tracks such as “Red Carpet” and the music video “Walk In My Shoes,” which reached #5 on specialized rankings.
During this time, the band maintained an intense touring schedule, performing extensively and sharing stages with various artists within the Christian music circuit. They also embarked on a tour alongside Bill Scott, host of the nationally syndicated radio show “Z-Jam.”
Throughout their career, the band evolved from a melodic rock-oriented sound into a style influenced by 1990s alternative rock. This transition culminated in their final studio release, Still… Songs of Restoration (1999), an album with a more introspective approach and a sound closer to contemporary worship. While not designed as a traditional congregational worship record, many of its songs feature vertically oriented lyrical themes. The album also included background vocals by the group Selah.
Age of Faith performed their final concert in 2000, bringing to a close a career defined by consistent touring, musical evolution, and a notable impact within the Christian rock niche of their era.
