Jack Patrick Russell (December 5, 1960 – August 7, 2024) was an American rock singer best known as the founding lead vocalist of Great White.
Born in Montebello, California, Russell developed an interest in music at an early age, influenced by legendary rock vocalists such as Robert Plant and Steven Tyler. During his youth, he performed in several local bands before meeting guitarist Mark Kendall at a concert. The two formed a band called Dante Fox, which would later be renamed Great White—derived from Kendall’s nickname due to his very light hair and complexion.
Russell served as Great White’s lead vocalist from 1981 to 1996, helping establish the band as a major force in the 1980s hard rock and glam metal scene. The group achieved commercial success with albums such as Once Bitten… (1987) and …Twice Shy (1989), producing hit singles like “Rock Me” and “Once Bitten, Twice Shy,” and gaining heavy rotation on MTV.
After leaving the band in 1996, Russell took time off to record and release his debut solo album Shelter Me (1999). He rejoined Great White later that year and remained with the band until 2001.
A defining and tragic moment in his career occurred on February 20, 2003, during a Great White performance at The Station nightclub in Rhode Island, where pyrotechnics ignited a fire that resulted in 100 fatalities, including guitarist Ty Longley. The incident remains one of the most devastating tragedies in live music history.
Following this period, Russell performed briefly as a solo artist before forming Jack Russell’s Great White, a separate version of the band that he led from 2002 onward. That same year, he released his second solo album, For You (2002).
In 2006, he returned to perform with the reformed classic lineup of Great White. However, he departed again in 2009 after suffering serious spinal injuries from a fall, which required multiple surgeries. During his recovery, he struggled with addiction but later achieved sobriety, motivated in part by the passing of his friend Jani Lane.
Russell resumed touring in 2011 under the name Jack Russell’s Great White to avoid confusion with the official Great White lineup, which continued with a different vocalist. In 2017, the band released He Saw It Comin’, marking a new phase in his career.
Beyond music, he launched official merchandise and a podcast project in 2022. In 2024, Russell announced his retirement after being diagnosed with Lewy body dementia. He passed away on August 7, 2024, at the age of 63.
