Rafa Martín

Rafa Martín (real name: Rafael Angulo Martín; born July 31, 1971, in Madrid, Spain) is a Spanish singer, songwriter, and guitarist associated with melodic hard rock and AOR.

From an early age, he showed a strong interest in music. At just 13 years old, he formed his first band, teaching himself how to play guitar and write songs. By the age of 17, he signed his first recording contract as a member of the band Los Que Faltaban, with whom he recorded two albums. During this period, their sound leaned toward Spanish pop rock, influenced by bands such as Los Secretos and Nacha Pop, gradually evolving into a more rock-oriented style, particularly on the album Quiero Gritar, where his distinctive raspy vocal style began to stand out.

Following this stage, he caught the attention of producer Pablo Pinilla, who signed him to a management deal and helped launch his solo career.

In 1994, he recorded his debut solo album, Corazón de Hierro, alongside the Canadian band Harem Scarem. The album was recorded in Italy, produced by Pablo Pinilla, and released in 1995 by Sony. It introduced a sound that was uncommon in the Spanish rock scene at the time, strongly influenced by international melodic hard rock. The involvement of musicians such as Pete Lesperance and Harry Hess played a key role in shaping its sound.

The album gained attention among AOR and melodic rock fans and has since become a cult reference within the genre. His vocal tone and style led to frequent comparisons with Bryan Adams. Despite positive reception and radio exposure, his relationship with Sony ended prematurely under circumstances beyond his control.

After this period, he entered a new phase in his career. He was approached by renowned producer Humberto Gatica, with whom he recorded his second album, Cuando Llegue a Volar (2000), in Los Angeles. The project featured top session musicians such as Vinnie Colaiuta, Michael Landau, Tim Pearce, and Neil Stubenhaus, among others. The album showed an evolution in his sound, incorporating broader influences and a more international production approach, although with some differences between the artist’s vision and the final result.

Following the release of his second album, Rafa Martín went through a period of reduced activity in terms of recordings and live performances, although he remained active as a songwriter, contributing to other artists, musicals, and advertising projects. Among these works is “La Pasión de Ganar,” associated with Spain’s professional football league during the 2005/2006 season. He also collaborated with artists such as Paco Ventura, Patricia Tapia, and Mercedes Ferrer.

Throughout his career, he has maintained a consistent presence as a live performer, playing venues across Spain. Among his most notable appearances are concerts alongside Bob Geldof and Simply Red in front of large audiences, as well as numerous smaller shows where he has built a close connection with his fans.

In 2012, he released his third album, El Rastro Que Otros Seguirán, a project funded directly by his fans. The album was produced by Rafa Martín himself and once again featured members of Harem Scarem, including Pete Lesperance and Harry Hess. It reflects a mature stage in his career, maintaining his melodic hard rock foundation while incorporating elements of AOR and pop rock.

The album includes tracks such as “Cada paso es una señal,” “Sueños de Rock & Roll,” “Tiempos Perros,” “Te he encontrado al final,” and “El camino que he de andar,” and features collaborations with musicians like Pablo Navarro, Clemente Ferrari, Greighton Doane, Pablo Padilla, Paco Ventura, and Patricia Tapia.

Throughout his career, Rafa Martín has developed a style defined by prominent guitars, melodic hooks, emotionally driven lyrics, and a distinctive raspy voice. His music blends influences from international rock artists such as Bryan Adams, Bruce Springsteen, and Bon Jovi, while maintaining a unique identity within Spanish rock.

Although he has not achieved massive commercial success, his work has endured among fans of melodic hard rock, and he is widely regarded as a cult artist within the Spanish-speaking AOR scene. His career reflects a path built on artistic integrity, independence, and a lasting connection with his audience.
